One for the Books

March 8, 2012 by christian

Last Sunday the big kids were so cranky they were ordered to separate rooms for a much needed time out.

They both fell asleep, which was great, I could make dinner in peace.  20 minutes or so later, I went to wake them up.  I wasn’t about to let them sleep for fear of a midnight wake up and feeding.

I went to Chloe first and tried to wake her.  I started off really sweet “Baby, it’s time for dinner” etc. It didn’t work.  I proceeded to shake her and finally she opened her eyes. They were those glassy rolling eyes, uh oh…she was REALLY asleep.  Finally I pulled her up, and she talked for a sec.  Ok, progress. Now for Atticus.  I went into his room, and same thing except I didn’t bother with the sweet part.  I just went in there and started talking, turning on lights taking covers off etc.  I pulled him up to an upright position.  He had the glass eye action too, and was not happy.  Finally I started to shake his shoulders and tell him “It’s dinner time, aren’t you hungry?”  He seemed to snap out of it, and got out of bed.

He started to walk down stairs, and I noticed that Chloe had fallen back to sleep.  I had to go back in to deal with her.  I just started with the shaking, pulling etc.  About this time I hear Ben yelling “ATTICUS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!”.  He yelled it a couple times, and then I hear Atticus start to cry, the cry when he knows he has done something wrong.  I walk out to see Atticus standing at the top of our landing on the stairs with his pants down.  He was peeing.  Alot. Down 7 stairs and onto the entry way where all of our shoes are kept.  When I say peeing, let me just be honest.  It was the first thing in the morning pee.  The kind that had been saved up all day…gusher.  It was running down the stairs like Niagra falls, swirling, dripping and splashing.  I guess Atticus finally came to when Ben started yelling at him.  By then it was too late, everything in the general vicinity was sprinkled, sprayed or misted..  He was so upset, and you could see him turning to figure out if he would go back up to the bathroom or what.  At this point I was yelling “DONT MOVE! JUST FINISH” I didn’t need that hose going rogue.  So when he was finally done, he ran upstairs so upset.  All he could say was “I didn’t know” over and over again.  Poor guy, I really felt so bad for him.

All I could do was laugh.  I was laughing so hard, and Ben was not appreciating it.  I mean, seriously, so much pee.  For me at least, it brought much needed humor to a day that was otherwise just hard.  This was the icing on the cake, but you couldn’t be mad.  I just had to roll with the punches and put this one as a memory I will never forget.

I love that boy, and his sincerity with a tear stricken face just wanting to make things right again.
